God with us

“…we will come to him and make our home with him.” (John 14:23)

This promise from Jesus to his disciples during the Upper Room Discourse is not a conditional promise – if you love me, I will live with you – it is the mark of the Christian; it is the mark of those that love Jesus.

As Christians, we are drawn to Christ by the Father (John 6:44); we are chosen by God (John 15:16) and pre-destined for adoption as sons of God (Eph. 1:5).  Our faith is the gift of God (Eph. 2:8), and the Holy Spirit who seals us as belonging to God, is the guarantee of our in inheritance in God (Eph 1:13-14).

Our Lord’s promise to not leave us as orphans (John 14:18) is tremendous!

Jesus had been with his disciples for three years, caring for them as their shepherd.  As he prepares to return to the Father, where he will also prepare a place for us, he promises the Holy Spirit.

Not only is Jesus preparing a place for us, but the Holy Spirit is preparing us for that place. We are being conformed to the image of Christ (Rom. 8:29). We are being transformed inwardly (2 Cor. 3:18); we will be also transformed externally.  On the final day, the day that Jesus returns, the same Spirit that raised Christ from the dead will give life to our mortal bodies (Rom. 8:11); our bodies will be transformed in the twinkling of an eye, the perishable putting on the imperishable, (1 Cor. 15:50-53) that we may be with the Lord forever (1 Thess. 4:17).

God is indeed with us, now and forever!
